Sister City
Gold foil printed on the cover is designed to celebrate the significance of the 50-year anniversary of the Matsudo-Whitehorse sister city relationship.
Chapter openers are designed to start as a double page spread. Each spread includes a large full-page image on the left and chapter title on the right.
Full-page images display important images, create visual intrigue and break the text flow into smaller sections.
Pages section sewn and case bound. Case binding is durable. When opened, pages lay flat.
Former Australian Prime Minister Sir Robert Gordon Menzies, seen here on the right, and Japanese Prime Minister Nobusuke Kishi were instrumental in forming the Matsudo-Whitehorse sister city relationship after the Second World War.
Chapter 5, At the heart is a mutual exchange, showcases art and culture that has been exchanged as a result of the sister city relationship.
Internal pages are designed using an asymmetrical grid that is reflected from the spine to form mirrored facing pages. This creates generous outside margins and breaks pages into horizontal areas for arranging text and images.
The typography for
Fifty Years of Friendship
blends English and Japanese into a gridded layout. Headings, lines and whitespace give structure and order to each page, while scale and repetition creates a hierarchy of information.
Nikki M Group provided photo retouching services to improve images for print. Some photographs were very poor in quality, but had historical significance. We adjusted ink coverage and removed obvious wear and tear, but kept the qualities that mark their place in time.
Fifty Years of Friendship
captures important historical events that have brought two cultures closer together. Each photo is a moment in time, documenting events, people and places.
Fifty Years of Friendship
was published to mark the 50 year anniversary of the Matsudo-Whitehorse sister city relationship.
English and Japanese are typeset side-by-side, with text aligning to a baseline grid. Both languages flow from page to page with images placed in and around the body copy.
